Biography
Michael is a professional clarinetist and bass clarinettist who has performed widely across Asia and Europe. Currently based in the Netherlands, he is recognized as one of the finest young talents in his field.
He highlighted his early career success by winning 1st Prize in the Bass Clarinet Category at the Macao Clarinet Asia Competition and 2nd Prize in the Open Class at the Hong Kong Buffet Crampon Clarinet Competition.
Michael has worked regularly with leading Asian orchestras such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic and Macao Orchestra. He has performed under conductors including Christoph Eschenbach, Patrick Furrer, Nabil Shehata, Lan Shui, Lio Kuokman, Perry So, Ralf Weikert, Ormsby Wilkins, John Wilson, Yip Wing-sie, Yu Long, and Jaap van Zweden.
In the Netherlands, Michael served as guest principal clarinetist with the Holland Symfonie Orkest and RBO Sinfonia. He has also been invited to perform with Camerata Venia Genève and the Amsterdam Music Collective.
Michael began his formal clarinet lessons with Johnny Fong and later earned his Bachelor of Music from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under Andrew Simon. He completed his first Master of Music degree at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague with Rick Huls, and later specialized in bass clarinet at Fontys Academy of the Arts, earning a second Master of Music degree under Dr. Henri Bok, graduating with a score of 9.5 out of 10 for his final recital. He has also benefited from lessons with Lorenzo Iosco, Olivier Patey, Davide Lattuada, and Jasper Grijpink, and participated in the Clarinet Soloist Course at the Soloist Academy with support from the Willem Mengelberg Fonds.
